Nelya Overcooked Lunch

A small domestic disaster and what it felt like in the moment.

Nelya put a pot of soup on the hob, turned the heat up, and walked away to answer a message. Twenty minutes later the kitchen smelled of burnt onion and the bottom of the pan was a black crust that no amount of scraping would salvage.

She stood over the sink, wooden spoon in hand, and started crying. Not the dramatic kind — just quiet, steady tears while she scraped the ruined soup into the bin.

I didn't say "it's only soup" or "we can order something". I know better than that. The lunch wasn't the point. It was the third thing that had gone wrong that week, the morning had been loud, and she'd been looking forward to this one quiet meal.

We ate toast instead. She stopped crying after a while. The pan soaked overnight and came clean the next morning.

Sometimes the thing that breaks you isn't the thing that broke. It's the weight you were already carrying.
